Out & About
Famous for its water, Evian is a compact town with a mixture of architecture, combining historic terraced side streets and an impressive Art Nouveau lake frontage dominated by the Casino and Palais Lumière, sat behind the gardens and promenade that lead to the ferry port and harbour.
The Palais Lumière pays homage to its association with the birth of cinema and its relationship with Charlie Chaplin, who lived his later years across the lake in Vevey, it now hosts art exhibitions throughout the year.
Niche shops, cafes, bars and restaurants offer a wide choice for visitors. There is a typically colourful twice weekly market in the town centre.
The world famous Thermal Spa is located only 3 minutes from the house where you can relax and take a treatment.
La Grange au Lac is a unique theatre built entirely from local wood. It boasts perfect acoustics and offers concerts throughout the year.
The lake ferry and other summer tourist boats operate throughout the year and you can take a variety of trips across or along the lake from the port of Evian.
Within 2 minutes you can be playing tennis at Evian Tennis Club, booking in at the equestrian centre for a lesson or a ride through the forest or taking the free funicular railway into the town centre, to avoid traffic and parking problems.
Within 5 minutes you can tee off at the Evian Resort Golf Club, home of the Evian Masters tournament each September. If that sounds too challenging, play mini golf on the lakeside or hire a pedalo.
The world famous jazz festival at Montreux bursts into life each June and can be reached within 35 minutes by a beautiful road trip around the lake. Make a day of it and stop off at the Chateau de Chillon en route or go on to Vevey, Lausanne and Nyon around the lake on the Swiss shore.
The medieval lakeside villages of Yvoire and Nernier are only 20 minutes from the house, just beyond the large sand beach of Excenevex.
If you are feeling up to it, you can book to parascend from the Memises or arrange white water rafting on the river Dranse 20 minutes away.
Walks can be taken directly from the house, with a range of routes from short and simple to long and strenuous. The more adventurous can take the cable car from Thollon on Wednesdays and weekends to walk the high paths of the Memises Mountains. Whatever your choice, you are guaranteed a great view. If you are here on July 14th or august 15th, be sure to take in the fantastic firework displays on the lake front, synchronised to the music of the live orchestra.
Low level walking is usually possible, snow permitting, but this is the season for winter sports, hire snow shoes and take to the mountains! Head to Thollon les Memises or Bernex, just 12 minutes away, for low cost skiing. The ski slopes look down on the lake and from the top station at Bernex you can look south to Mont Blanc. Alternatively, drive down the Abondance valley or valley Vert for unlimited cruising on the Portes du Solielle slopes from Chatel or Morzine.
